Boing Boing: Cory quit his day-job

Boing Boing: Cory quit his day-job: "This is the most exciting day of my life -- the day I quit my day-job. Thanks to everyone who made this possible, all the readers and bloggers and friends and editors and agents. I'll do my best not to screw it up! "

Cory Doctorow is a seriously cool guy, a great writer and as modern as they come. I really hope everything works out for him. Given his many talents, I'm confident that it will.

Autism: Getting the Truth Out

I've just found this really powerful site about autism and the difficulties autistic people face because "normal" people including the medical profession do not accept their behaviour. It's well worth a read.

Tim Berners Lee is Blogging!

The father of the internet has launched a blog!

So I have a blog | Decentralized Information Group (DIG) Breadcrumbs.

He's had to close comments already after 450 "thank you very much" messages. I'm not one for hero worship but this man changed the world forever. It's an honour to be able to read his words directly.

RIAA Bans Telling Friends About Songs | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

LOS ANGELES—The Recording Industry Association of America announced Tuesday that it will be taking legal action against anyone discovered telling friends, acquaintances, or associates about new songs, artists, or albums. "We are merely exercising our right to defend our intellectual properties from unauthorized peer-to-peer notification of the existence of copyrighted material," a press release signed by RIAA anti-piracy director Brad Buckles read. "We will aggressively prosecute those individuals who attempt to pirate our property by generating 'buzz' about any proprietary music, movies, or software, or enjoy same in the company of anyone other than themselves." RIAA attorneys said they were also looking into the legality of word-of-mouth "favorites-sharing" sites, such as coffee shops, universities, and living rooms.

Scary Carol's "I Invented Sudoku" Cash-In Promotions

I hate Carol Vorderman and the way she has cashed in the reputation of her old university (where she got a triple third, suggesting, perhaps, that dear Carol was clever enough to get in but not quite clever enough to keep up with the work). She is a horrible, cynical, manipulative individual who uses her reputation among the tabloid-reading market as an intellectual to con them out of every penny she possibly can.

When she's not pimping for rent sharks trying to convince the credulous that they should transfer their debts over to them, she's whoring herself out to every marketing prick with a product that smells faintly clever.

Christianity a-Go-Go

"Anne Rohmer, 21, wearing garters and stockings, posed on a doorstep as the prostitute Rahab.
"We wanted to represent the Bible in a different way and to interest young people," she told news agency Reuters. "

Buy Nothing Day : Adbusters

Buy Nothing Day : Adbusters

I hate the mindless consumerism that passes for culture these days. I hate the dumb shoppers who live for their labels. I hate the magazines that exist only to sell advertising space to idiots happy to pay for billboards.

Yes, I know I'm as guilty as the next person. That doesn't make me hate it any less.

If only for one day, say no to the frantic consumer-binge that's subsumed our culture.

Theatre de Complicite Tackle Shakespeare

"What happens when a Duke hands over his power to his second-in-command and wanders the streets in disguise to watch as events unfold? What if that second-in-command pursues his obsession to purify society of sexual corruption, yet finds himself caught up in his own erotic dream? And what if a young man finds himself condemned to death for fornication, the price of his life is his sister's virginity, and his sister is a nun?"

Measure for Measure is not my favourite of Shakespeare's plays but I will definitely try to buy tickets for Simon McBurney's production when it comes to the UK.

The Genius of Gregory Crewdson

Gregory Crewdson's photos are amazing. They're like stills from a film - but the kind of freaky film that leaves you disturbed and wondering what the hell you just saw. More of his work here.

Sony Sucks

This sucks! Sony have put a virus on some of their music cds so if you play them in a pc or a mac you get infected with some nasty piece of spyware that snoops on what you do and reports back to the Mothership. Oh yeah and it makes your pc vulnerable to other hackers. Fuck that. I'm boycotting Sony from now on. More information here.
